Homemade Dinner Rolls!

Homemade Dinner Rolls!

Before I tell you about my experience with dinner rolls, I feel it is necessary to provide you with a little background history.  It has only been in the last 5 years or so that I have dabbled in baking.  The only type of baking I do not enjoy involves baking cookies.....never had the interest or desire due to the constant back and forth from the oven and too many distractions.  After all these years I do not see that changing.....

With that said, I found baking bread very intriguing.  Working with simple ingredients and watching them "rise" to the occasion after kneading the dough into a perfectly elastic, soft, and fragrant dough ball with just my hands - now that is magic and better than therapy!

In retrospect, there was one type of bread that I was always hesitant to try and that was the common dinner roll.  Most of my breads are on the "artisan" side meaning rustic shapes and simple ingredients.  This typically results in a heavier bread with a noticeable crust.  It seemed impossible that I could make a dough that would be light, fluffy, and have a wonderful flavor....until now....

Having spent countless hours on MANY recipes sites, I never found a recipe for dinner rolls that "spoke" to me until I happened upon a site called The Stay At Home Chef.  I found a link on the site for what claimed to be "The Best Homemade Dinner Rolls Ever" and guess what....it spoke to me!

I reviewed the recipe and instructions that Rachel has on her blog and followed them almost to the letter.  The only difference was that I did not use a stand mixer but mixed all of the ingredients with my trusty Danish Dough Whisk and kneaded on my new DIY dough board (which is still performing FANTASTIC and working out perfectly...love that dang thing).

After mixing and kneading the ingredients, I filled a 9x13 cake pan as well as an 8x10ish vintage Ovenex baking pan with these glorious dough balls and was beyond happy throughout the entire process.  The dough mixed beautifully, kneaded wonderfully, and rolled into soft balls just perfectly.  I had a good feeling about this and was over the moon happy with the outcome.  Again, this was my first attempt EVER and I hope these images speak for themselves....

The dough rises so beautifully during the first resting stage and after rolled into the balls, covered with cling wrap and a towel, they kept right on rising....

Into the oven they went and watching them for a nice brown top, I popped them out of the oven and brushed them with a bit of butter...

These rolls really impart a wonderful bread-baking smell coming from the oven and when cooling, it is sooooooo hard not to rip one off right away and devour it.  They are so pillowy soft and have a wonderful dinner roll flavor with just a tiny hint of sweetness!

In order to keep myself and Mike from tearing into them too soon, I got really involved taking pictures of these little gems....

Judging by the way they clung to each other, I just knew they would have a wonderful texture and would be such an awesome departure from the usual heavy artisan style breads I typically make....

One bite of these little wonders and both Mike and I were sold.  This was the perfect recipe with the perfect flavor and the success factor was off the charts.  This recipe also claims to be great for a homemade cinnamon roll dough to which I wholeheartedly agree.  Having made homemade cinnamon rolls in the past, this recipe will be ideal for creating fun new fillings for unique sweet roll experiments!

Please stop by The Stay At Home Chef site to check out this recipe as well as so many others that I too am going to explore.  Rachel's site is jam-packed with helpful information and very informative.  You won't be disappointed!

Needless to say, these dinner rolls did not last long but that is no problem whatsoever...I can't way to make more!!

Hoping you had a fantastic holiday weekend and let me know of your newly found baking recipe successes!  There is a link on my sidebar to subscribe to my blog for updates on the latest posts as there are big plans for 2017 and I always look forward to hearing from you!  Connect with me on Instagram for future baking and photography updates as well!!
