The Ocean and The Artist

The Ocean and The Artist

As we slowly enter the autumn season, I realize how long it has been since my last post.  The world has turned happily over the past several weeks with many wonderful happenings and experiences.  The leaves have begun to show their colors, the evenings are beginning to feel crisp, and thoughts of an upcoming trip to the ocean are timed perfectly.

For me, any place near or on the water is heavenly.   I love old wood docks, boats of any kind, and the sounds of waves, boat motors, and the wind.  So many memories of summers at the beach, boating on the river in Eau Claire, WI when my boys were younger, and now......

...the ocean.....

In one week we will be leaving for a much needed vacation to Narragansett, Rhode Island to visit family.  Mike and I have made several trips there and each time we experience something magical to bring home with us.  It is probably more me than him, but the ocean is a sight I have dreamed about seeing for many years and I vividly recall the first time he brought me there....how perfect that the one place I knew I would love seeing was with the love of my life....

When I am near the water, big or small, I feel peaceful, relaxed, and so happy.  It is really hard to describe, but in that moment, the worries are washed away.  Dreams are so clear.  Goals are so attainable.  Love is so felt.  It is as if I experience the most effective therapy in the world.  To stand on the shore of the ocean and realize just how small you are is empowering.  Although small....so powerful and positive....so unstoppable.....

All of this brings me to a point of sharing what has been happening in my world......

First, let me start by saying the guest room turned out great.  I did not spend any time taking photos of the "after" simply because I feel you would be disappointed.  As a matter of fact, I removed that post as I felt it an oddity on my blog.  I did not repaint, refurnish, or re-floor.....I did not DIY new decor or sew curtains.  I did not scour home decor sites for trendy accessories nor did I spend a king's ransom on new bedding.  I simply gutted the chaos and cleaned.  I left the bedding all white and fresh.  The windows were left free of curtains, the white painted floor left blank, and the bed side tables free of clutter.  I managed to get the big old crazy "diy gone wrong" cupboard unit into the closet and that made for some clean, simple storage.  To me it was a success as the room was polished clean floor to ceiling and left very very minimal in design and decor.  I call this project my testament to plain old-fashioned deep clean housekeeping.  The room is now a delight to walk into with the minimal look and feel....a place of the few things kept and everything in it's place.

Next up....

A PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY EXHIBITION IN THE WORKS!!

We have a wonderful art gallery in our small town, ArtZ Gallery and I have had the pleasure of visiting there many times.  They feature a wide variety of artists and their talents from photography and painting to mixed media and pottery...very impressive talent indeed.

On a whim, about a year ago, I researched how this gallery works with artists and how they pick and choose the art for monthly exhibitions.  Turns out, they have a jury committee that meets quarterly and reviews applications and art examples to determine a good fit.  The thought of having my photography shown among this talented pool of creatives seemed far-fetched but worth a try....I submitted an application....

About a month ago I received an email from the committee asking if I would be interested in being a featured "artist" for an exhibition in 2018!  YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU!  I am now going through the process of readying myself and my "art" for a showing next August.  Now this may seem a ways out but believe me, I am grateful for the extra time to prepare...to shoot new pieces....work out framing details....display materials....and most importantly, to develop an "Artist Statement".

Yes, an "Artist Statement".....

Up to this point on my creative blog journey I have dabbled in some DIY projects, baking, food photography. and even a small kitchen towel business.  Not once during this time did I refer to myself as an "artist".  Creative Hobbyist at best, but never once an "artist".  This was a HUGE eye-opener for me!

Just the thought that my photography could actually be considered "art" and that I could give myself permission to call myself an "artist"...HUGE EYE-OPENER!

As you can probably imagine there are a mountain of things to do over the next several months.  This is an incredible opportunity that I want to take full advantage of and to present myself and my art in the best possible light.

Ever since receiving this invitation a couple of weeks ago, my mind has been swirling....the creativity thinking meter has spiked off the charts!  I have been working quite hard on refining a style over the past year by trying so many photography techniques.  Experimenting with lighting, props, subject matter, and feel.  This was very beneficial as I quickly noticed what felt like "me" and what didn't.

That is powerful!

It gave me courage to try things I never thought possible.  It gave me permission to dislike what didn't turn out.  It gave me "artistic freedom" and I am loving every minute of it!

My photography area of joy lies in all things still life.  Food, vintage objects, and flowers....my triple threat, if you will.  My three Musketeers....my joy.

I am exploring different styles with my images.....

Each of these photography trials has given me more and more courage to "put myself out there".  Not just on my blog but in person, to the public.  There are moments I am terrified and then I switch gears and am elated with the upcoming opportunity.  I would love to take you along this journey of preparing for an exhibition and hope you will join me.  If you have suggestions or recommendations, I am all ears.  Share your experience with all of us and together we will learn.

Plan on seeing a lot of photography over the next several months as I capture moments of my vision and ultimately....my art.

Back to the Ocean and now...The Ocean and The Artist....

This is the man who gave me the ocean...who gave me a whole new world....who gives me everything in life I could ever dream of...most of all .....Love.

The man who gave me the ocean....

The man who gave me the ocean....

In a few short days we go to the ocean together.  I, to dream, relax, create, and love...with him right there beside me.

It is going to be a wonderful ride this life is......

I wish you "oceans" as well in all you do.

Joan
