Simple Blog Styling and Branding Process

From my last post it may have seemed that I was all over the blog decision-making map and in many ways I was.  Having taken some time to sort through the areas I needed to address, I am excited to share the results:

Web Host - Blogger

After much mental debate over a web host, I have decided that my needs are best met with Blogger.  I have my .com mapped to the site and am “comfortable” with Blogger.  I love the look and feel of Squarespace but I am not at a level to consider that and need to FOCUS on the objective at hand – photography.  After all, that is the reason I started this blog!

Branding – White & Denim Blue

I am and always will be drawn to a minimalist style.  White is a clean and simple favorite color choice for my main blog color palette.   A dark Denim Blue is a secondary color favorite as I live in my jeans outside of work.  There is no better outfit than a white turtleneck and a pair of well loved blue jeans.  Unless you add a pair of white canvas Keds - That’s my look top to bottom!

Typography was an easy choice considering the millions of options.  Believe me, when you Google “typography” there is a wealth of information which can add to the confusion very quickly.  I love vintage, hence my blog and company name type (Old Standard TT) and simple-clean-minimal look for the posts (Josefin Sans).  I think they both work well together and present a nice variation of styles without looking too complicated or mixed-up.

One of the greatest lessons I learned from my last post to the present is that so many areas of blogging from planning a visual presentation/style/brand, to finding your writing voice and niche, and the insecurities of time management, financial involvement (web hosting and photography equipment) can all be very overwhelming especially it you want it “right” right out of the gate.  This feeling can put the brakes on creativity very quickly.  Take a step back, trust yourself, and breathe.  It all comes together.

On to the next steps in which I will share my yearly blogging editorial calendar.  I also mentioned that I want to share more photo styling, still life examples, and prop finds - this is also in the works.

I hope you like the small enhancements to my blog.  Please share your comments as I always look forward to hearing from you!

Branding and The Squarespace dilemma - The Chicken/Egg Conundrum

This blog post is written for anyone who has succumbed to the indecision's of "Branding" and "do I have my blog on the best platform so that I don't have the nightmare of exporting to another platform when I may out-grow the one I am currently on?"

If you are like me, you base your decisions on a variety of reasons.  Typically they include financial requirements, time intensity, and maintenance.  I should probably back up a bit.........

Here is the dilemma combined with HUGE dreams and goals, and the realization that if I don't commit, I stall.  If I don't decide, I know the drill.  SO..that being said, I have decided to become completely transparent and take you on this next-step excursion with me.

The next several weeks are going to be about regrouping and focusing.  I stayed up way too late last night putting an editorial calendar list together which covered the entire year starting in December.  Once I had completed this list I was excited as I now had a "plan" of the things I wanted to share.

I also quickly realized that I did not spend much time on branding or deciding on the best hosting platform.  I am very familiar with Blogger and in order to get the blog ball rolling, it was a quick start.  After all, there are so many blogs I follow (see sidebar) that use Blogger and they have lengthy, informative, and gorgeous content.  At the same time, I also had a trial account on Squarespace that I had played around with and fell in love with the responsive and beautiful templates.

Where am I going with this you wonder?  I'm not entirely sure I have the complete answer but I do know where I need to begin - the beginning.

So, here is the plan.  I am going to begin by revisiting my current platform and decide whether or not to stay where I am on Blogger or since I am still so new (fingers crossed exporting will not be a nightmare - I am a realist though) move to Squarespace.  To all of the Wordpress fans out there, I don't want to add that to the mix but thank you for wanting to suggest that as an option.  My choices are to stay on Blogger or move to Squarespace.  IF I decide to move, the domain will remain the same but the site may look wonky for a bit while I work out the kinks.  I will give you a heads-up if I take that path.

Once that decision is made, the branding process will begin.  Earlier this summer I was fortunate enough to grab a copy of "How To Style Your Brand" by Fiona Humberstone and I loved her process, writing style, and the overall feel of her presentation.  Her blog The Brand Stylist is also fun to visit as she shares so much information - check her and the book out! (No affiliate marketing here just an honest to goodness recommendation)

Okay then.  Here we go.  I will have more updates on next steps over the upcoming days.  If you have thought of moving your site or perhaps branding/re-branding, jump on board and we can travel together.  Or if you prefer to watch from the sidelines, please share comments and suggestions as I look forward to input.  If you have a question, I will do my best to get you an answer.  If you wish to chuckle, feel free.  Laughing is contagious and I have a great sense of humor!

Have a wonderful evening!
